Hutch aged six weeks

Hutch, the first guide dog we sponsored.  Here he is when he was just six weeks old.  Have a look below to follow his journey to becoming a guide dog.

Hutch’s

12 Week Pupdate

Hutch is now a little over 12 weeks old and he has settled in very well with his puppy walker, Mo. He is a very confident little puppy; this confidence was displayed during his recent trip to the BBC to take part in The One Show, which he took in his stride. He coped well in the studio and was not fazed by the lifts he had to use. Mo tells us that the studio for The One Show is in the same area as Top Gear and Hutch was not fazed by the sounds, he was a real ambassador for Guide Dogs.

Hutch has had his final vaccinations which now allow him to explore the world at his own level, no more being carried by Mo! He is a very responsive puppy who is walking well on the lead in his local area. He has visited the local supermarket where he coped with the new sights and sounds.

Hutch plays nicely with Cooper, an 18 month unsuccessful guide dog that he lives with. He is also happy to amuse himself with his toys.

Hutch has experienced a bus journey which Mo tells us he coped well with. In the coming weeks Hutch will be taken into the City of Reading to experience the busy Oracle Shopping Centre. He was not been fazed by the noise the refuse and recycling collection lorries made during a recent walk, Mo describes Hutch as a very sound puppy.

During the recent festivities Hutch loved to look at the Christmas tree, he did pull a few of the low handing decorations which Mo said she expected from a puppy of his age.

Hutch is off to a good start with his training and is enjoying living with Mo. We hope that you will enjoy following Hutch’s developments over the coming months.

Other comments

Hutch is a fairly straight forward puppy, he is willing and generally responsive. He mostly appears quite relaxed when out and about, not too many distractions at this time. Hutch recently played a starring role on ‘The One Show’, he coped well with the trip to the TV studio which will have been quite different to his usual day to day experiences. Hutch gets on well with the Puppy Walker’s pet dog at home and is generally trustworthy when left on his own.

Below is an extract from a letter from Guide Dogs about Hutch.

I have some very exciting news - Hutch, the guide dog puppy named in memory of your husband, Bob, whom you have been sponsoring through his vital puppy-walking phase has headed off to one of our National Training Schools to start his formal training this month!  I am delighted to enclose a picture of Hutch in his training harness - it wonderful to see how he has changed over the last year!

All of us at Guide Dogs are incredibly grateful for your generous support of Hutch.  By supporting him, you have not only helped us to change the future of a blind and partially-sighted person that, one day soon, we hope that Hutch will be a lifeline to, you have also helped us to provide our vital services to blind and partially-sighted people right across the UK.
